Create and manage custom assets

Custom assets let you manually track investments such as a savings account or a property. Choose Account to track a balance, or Asset to track an investment with a price and quantity.

To find custom assets, open Home, select the magnifying-glass icon at the top right, then select Custom in the category row below the search field. Scroll the category row horizontally if Custom is not visible.

You can create one custom asset with the free version of Stock Events. PRO supports unlimited custom assets.

Create a custom asset

  1. Open Home and select the portfolio or watchlist where you want to add the investment.
  2. Select the magnifying-glass icon at the top right.
  3. Scroll the category row below the search field and select Custom.
  4. If the list is empty, select Create Custom Asset. If custom assets are already listed, select the Custom row with the plus icon below them.
  5. Enter a Name and Symbol, then select the Currency. The symbol must contain only letters and numbers, without spaces or punctuation.
  6. Optionally add Notes or select the image circle at the top to choose an image from your photo library.
  7. Choose the type and enter its starting value:
    • Account: Enter the Current Balance, for example the balance of a savings account.
    • Asset: Enter the price per unit in Price, select the Price Date, and enter the number of units in Quantity.
  8. Set up income if the investment pays it, using the options described below. Otherwise, leave the income options unselected.
  9. Select Save.

Current Balance must be greater than zero for an Account. Price and Quantity must both be greater than zero for an Asset.

For example, to track one property valued at $250,000, select Asset, choose USD as the Currency, enter 250000 as the Price, and enter 1 as the Quantity. Set Price Date to the date of that valuation.

If you start from Combined View, Stock Events asks you to select an individual portfolio before opening the custom asset editor.

Set up recurring income

Income is optional. You can configure it during creation or later from the custom asset editor.

  • Account: Select Percentage Income and enter the annual rate in Percentage.
  • Asset: Select Fixed Income and enter the amount per unit for each payment in Income, or select Percentage Income and enter an annual rate in Percentage.

For percentage income, enter the annual rate even when payments repeat monthly or on another schedule. Stock Events distributes the annual rate across the scheduled payments. For an Asset, the calculation uses its recorded price, so updating the price can change the calculated income.

  1. Select an income option and enter an amount or percentage greater than zero.
  2. Select Repeat and choose Daily, Weekly, Bi-Weekly, Monthly, Bi-Monthly, or Yearly.
  3. Complete the schedule details:
    • Weekly and Bi-Weekly schedules require a Weekday.
    • Monthly schedules use Every to choose the number of months between payments and Day of Month for the payment day. When Every is greater than 1, select the first month using Starting from.
    • Bi-Monthly schedules require a Day of Month.
    • Yearly schedules require a Month and Day of Month.
  4. Select Save when creating the custom asset, or Update when editing it.

For the property example with Quantity set to 1, entering 1000 as Fixed Income and choosing a monthly schedule tracks $1,000 for each scheduled payment. For multiple units, the fixed income amount applies to each unit held.

Stock Events uses these settings to calculate the income tracked in the app. To turn income off, select the active income option again so it is no longer selected, then save or update the entry.

Update an asset's price

Custom Asset prices are entered manually. Use Add Price when the value per unit changes.

  1. Open the custom asset from your portfolio.
  2. Select Add Price at the bottom right of its chart.
  3. Enter the price per unit in Price and select the Price Date.
  4. Select Save.

A price dated before the current recorded price adds historical data without replacing the newer current price. Adding a price does not change the quantity you hold.

Add Price is available for the Asset type. For an Account, update the position as described below.

Update quantities and account balances

Use the position screen to record changes in the quantity held or an account balance.

  1. Select the individual portfolio or watchlist and open the custom asset.
  2. Select the large position button showing your current share count or Enter Your Shares.
  3. Use Transactions mode. Newly created custom assets already use this mode.
  4. Select Buy to add units or Sell to remove units.
  5. If the input shows Value, select that label to switch to Shares. Enter the quantity, Date, and Price, then select Save.

For an Account, each unit represents one unit of its currency at a price of 1. For example, to record a $500 deposit into a USD account, add a Buy transaction for 500 Shares at a Price of 1 USD. To record a $200 withdrawal, add a Sell transaction for 200 Shares at a Price of 1 USD.

Enter the amount being added or removed, rather than the new total balance. These entries update the balance tracked in Stock Events.

Edit a custom asset

  1. Open the custom asset's detail screen.
  2. Select the pencil icon at the top right.
  3. Change its Name, Notes, image, or income settings.
  4. Select Update.

Symbol, Currency, and the Account or Asset choice cannot be changed after creation. Use Add Price for price changes and the position screen for quantity or balance changes.

Delete a custom asset

  1. Open the custom asset and select the pencil icon at the top right.
  2. Select the trash icon in the editor's top-right corner.
  3. On Are you sure?, select CONTINUE.

Deleting a custom asset removes the asset and its associated positions and transactions across your portfolios and watchlists. This is not limited to the portfolio currently selected.
