Why the Daily Percentage Change May Differ from your Broker or other Apps

You might notice that the daily percentage change for a stock in our app sometimes differs slightly from websites like Yahoo Finance or Google Finance. This is a common source of confusion — and here’s why it happens.

The Official Method (Used by Stock Exchanges and Our App)

We calculate the daily percentage change using the official exchange method — the same one used by the official stock exchange and professional data providers such as Bloomberg and Refinitiv.

Formula:
(Last trade of the day − Previous day’s official close) ÷ Previous day’s official close

This method reflects the true daily performance of a stock based on official market data and is recognized by regulators and financial institutions.

The Alternative Method (Used by Some Websites)

Some finance websites and apps, such as Yahoo Finance or Google Finance, use a simplified or “convenient” calculation:

(Last trade − First trade of the day) ÷ First trade of the day

In practice, that means they often use the first trade (or even pre-market data) as the baseline, instead of the official previous close.
This can make a stock appear up on a day when it’s actually down according to the exchange — or vice versa.

Example

Let’s say:

  • Previous close (official): 20.16
  • First trade next morning: 20.05
  • Last trade of the day: 20.08
SourceCalculationResult
Exchange / Our App(20.08 − 20.16) ÷ 20.16−0.40%
Yahoo / Google(20.08 − 20.05) ÷ 20.05+0.15%

So while the stock officially fell 0.4%, those platforms might show a small gain.

What This Means for You

  • The numbers in our app reflect the real change in your portfolio since the previous trading day.
  • Our data is identical to your broker’s official data — only the display method for the daily percentage may differ.
  • You can verify this by checking the official exchange website, which will show the same result as our app.
