ContraFect Corporation (CFRXQ) was a clinical-stage biotechnology company primarily focused on the discovery and development of protein and antibody-based therapeutic products. Its mission was to combat life-threatening and drug-resistant infectious diseases, with a particular emphasis on the United States. The company's most advanced program was Exebacase, a lysin, which had progressed to Phase III clinical trials for the treatment of Staphylococcus aureus infections. Exebacase was also being explored for its potential in addressing persistent bacteremia caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in individuals with COVID-19. Another investigational antibacterial therapeutic, CF-370, was undergoing Phase I clinical trials. This compound aimed to combat Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, encompassing conditions such as ventilator-associated pneumonia, bloodstream infections, complicated urinary tract infections, and infections arising from surgery. In preclinical development, ContraFect had CF-296, an engineered lysin. This candidate was designed to target joint infections like osteomyelitis and prosthetic joint infections (PJI), specifically addressing invasive Staphylococcus aureus infections, including those associated with biofilms on prosthetic joints and indwelling medical devices. Additionally, the company held a licensing agreement with The Rockefeller University, aimed at identifying novel lysin therapeutic candidates effective against gram-negative pathogens. Established in 2008, ContraFect Corporation was headquartered in Yonkers, New York. However, its operations ceased when, on December 4, 2023, ContraFect Corporation filed a voluntary petition for liquidation under Chapter 7 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.
