This index is designed to track the performance of large and mid-capitalization Japanese equities. It applies a series of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) screens, excluding companies that fail to meet specific criteria. These exclusions include entities associated with controversial weaponry, those with an MSCI ESG Rating of 'CCC' or no rating, and companies generating certain revenues from tobacco, conventional weapons, nuclear weapons, civilian firearms, thermal coal, unconventional and/or arctic oil and gas extraction, and palm oil. Furthermore, any issuer with an MSCI Controversies Score of zero is also omitted. The index is constructed to have a lower greenhouse gas intensity relative to its benchmark and is re-evaluated every quarter. Comprehensive details on the index, its selection process, and weighting methodology can be found on msci.com.
